“Unleashed Art” Sponsor ARTinBUSINESS Holds Fundraiser for Animal Rescue Coalition
ARTinBUSINESS (AiB) held a silent auction benefit for the Animal Rescue Coalition (ARC) at a special event Wednesday evening, July 30, at the Peter Paul Gallery, 45 S. Palm Avenue, Sarasota.

The gallery also held a 25% off sale on all gallery artwork, sculpture and antiques. And adoptable kittens and puppies were available from ARC on-site during this mid-summer fun event. “At this entirely new and novel event, we offered many artists' works at very affordable prices,” said gallery owner Peter Paul. More than 80 artworks, sculptures and certificates for animal services, with a total value nearly $40,000, were available for auction.

Participating artists included Karin David, Larry Forgard, David Gonya, Barbara Harrison Richard Hora, Peter Koenig, Linda Larisch, Peter Paul, Peter Swedenburg, and Leslie Uguccioni. Also featured were original works and prints from tennis great Martina Navratilova and her artist partner Juraj Kralik. Their “Arts Grand Slam” series features themes from Wimbledon and French, Australian and US Opens.

The Animal Rescue Coalition is a not-for-profit organization finding homes for adoptable dogs and cats in Sarasota and Manatee counties. Their services include proactive spay/neuter and adoption programs, each focused on helping people recognize the profound benefits of animal companionship.

ARTinBUSINESS, known for its many art-related events in Sarasota, introduces art to businesses through open houses, sales events and art openings in different locations. Additionally, AiB provides art-related services such as art lease programs as well as marketing and promotional support.

First Fridays Remain Popular
During the “Dog Days of Summer,” as those hot, humid days between June and September are called, Palm Avenue’s 1st Friday Art Walks continued to draw people out for evening strolls, cool refreshment, casual shopping and new friends.

Below is an image of a recent 1st Friday Art Walk taken during one of our breezy, friendly and busy monthly events.

On The Move

Two long-time Palm Avenue merchants have closed recently. Medici Gallery, an anchor of the southern end of our art district at 75 S. Palm Avenue, was known for its collection of original art by contemporary European artists. Owner Bob Rubenstein’s commitment to excellence will be missed here as well as his insight into the gallery and art business.

For many years, popular Design Impressions Gallery occupied the first floor of the historic Hotel DeMarcay at 33 S. Palm Avenue. Owners Carol and Werner Meier have retired from the gallery and antique business. Both were dedicated advocates and proponents of the Palm Avenue Merchants Association; in fact, Carol served terms as president in recent years.

Current PA Developments

Development of nearby residential and commercial properties has all but stopped during this real estate market downturn.

The adaptive reuse of the Hotel DeMarcay project by The Leiter Group was approved by the Sarasota City Commission in Dec 2006. The condominium and restaurant project was slated to begin in 2009.

However, their joint project with John Buck Co. of Chicago for the north Palm Avenue property behind the Sarasota Opera House has been rejected by the City after more than a year of planning, hearings and negotiations. This public-private partnership project would have included a hotel, condo residences and commercial spaces with a 400 space parking garage. After ten years and now four failed projects to develop this 2.5 acre parcel, used for parking only, no other project appears in the works.

“Discovering Downtown Sarasota” guide book released
Inter Ad Agency, 45 S. Palm Avenue (365-5200) announces the release of “Discovering Downtown Sarasota”, the 2008 guide to downtown Sarasota. It’s a handy, 4” x 9” pocket guide with color-coded locator maps and merchant directory.
Palm Avenue merchants are featured in the booklet as are merchants from the four other downtown shopping districts (Main Street, Burns Square, Rosemary District and Towles Court).

Just wondering...
It takes innovative marketing to get thru the Dog Days of Summer. Is this a new refreshing drink, instruction on vegetable preparation, or....?
